Football - On the day the world cup starts, Maidstone United have announced the signings of 2 very experienced central defenders who have both played for the club in the past. Nick Davis who has joined from Tonbridge Angles and Marc Clarey from Grays Athletic where he was an ever present in their conference campaign last season. Nick Davis played a significant number of games for the Stones under Jim Ward during the Kent league days and had a successful spell with Fisher Athletic where they gained back to back promotions. Cycling - In the Criterium Dauphine in France Janez Brajkovic is in the overall lead after the first of three tough mountain stages. The main contenders cancelled each other out during the mountain top finish at Risuol. Britain's David Millar slipped to fourth overall after being dropped by the leaders on the final climb.
